Fed up of assigning shifts to your team when they've specified that they're free, only to find that they immediately want to swap to another time? Let them do the hard work instead; open shifts allow you to add all the shifts that need to be filled and then throw them open to your team so that they can choose which they want to work. Not keen on the idea of that much unregulated madness? Set the shifts to need approval so that you get the final say on who gets assigned what.
1. Head over to the scheduling page by clicking on the 'Scheduling' calendar icon on the left of your screen. You'll default to the week view, but you can change view if you want to.
2. Find the date range you want to add shifts for, then click the plus button in the Open Shifts row on the relevant day of the week.
3. Follow the regular steps for adding a shift. If you're happy for the shift to be assigned to the first person to respond to it then leave the 'Require Approval' tickbox at the top of the Add Shift modal unticked. If you'd prefer responses to go into a shortlist for you or another manager to choose an assignee from then make sure it's selected.
4. Once you publish your open shift the details will be emailed to all employees who are eligible to work it. You'll receive notifications to let you know someone's claimed the shift if it doesn't require approval, or to let you know when employees are added to the shortlist if it does. If no one suitable claims the shift then you'll still have the ability to manually assign it
